Baked Spaghetti from Filiatra

  Ingredients List:

  • 1/2 lb. lean ground beef
  • 1 onion
  • 4 tbsp.  Greek extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. cumin
  • 1 clove
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1-1/2 cups crushed tomatoes
  • 1 cup water
  • Sriracha sauce (optional)
  • 450g spaghetti
  • 80g gouda cheese
  • 80g emental cheese
  • 80g kefalograviera cheese
  • Salt & pepper to taste


  1. Pre-heat oven to 425*f/220*c
  2. Cook spaghetti to desired doneness
  3. In a large sauce pan, brown ground beef in olive oil
  4. Chop onion and garlic and add to browning beef
  5. Season to taste
  6. Once ground beef is browned and onion is translucent, add cinnamon, cumin, clove and bay leaf to pan
  7. Add optional sriracha for added spice
  8. Cook for 3-4 minutes
  9. Add crushed tomatoes and water to pan and simmer for 15-20 minutes or until sauce starts to thicken 
  10. Add cooked spaghetti to sauce and mix well
  11. Place in baking dish and spread evenly
  12. Grate cheeses over spaghetti mixture and bake for 25-35 minutes or until golden brown and blistered on top


Notes & Tips:
  • Makes 4 portions
  • Garnish with mizithra or kefalotyri
  • Serve with Greek salad
  • Can be frozen before or after baking
  • Recipe can be doubled or tripled
  • Use any pasta you have on hand
  • Omit ground beef for vegetarian option
