Greek Meatballs & Orzo Bake | Meatball Giouvetsi

greek meatballs & orzo

  Ingredients List:

  • 1 lb. ground beef
  • 1 onion
  • 1 garlic clove
  • Bunch of parsley
  • Bunch of mint
  • 1/4 cup Greek extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups crushed tomatoes
  • 2 cups water
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 500g orzo
  • Salt & pepper to taste
 

Method:

  1. Pre-heat oven to 375*f/180*c
  2. Finely chop onion, garlic and fresh herbs
  3. In a large mixing bowl combine ground beef with chopped herbs, egg and add olive oil
  4. Mix well and form into 1-1/2" meatballs and place in baking pan
  5. Evenly distribute orzo around meatballs
  6. In the same bowl as the ground beef add the crushed tomatoes, water, cinnamon and season
  7. Mix well and pour over meatballs & orzo making sure to distribute evenly thoughout pan
  8. Bake uncovered for 1 to 1-1/2 hours

 

Notes & Tips:
  • Makes 4-6 servings
  • Turn meatballs for even cooking
  • Add water and stir during baking so orzo cooks and doesn't stick 
  • Garnish with mizithra cheese or kefalotyri
  • Serve with green Greek salad
