Hilopites With Lamb | Greek Egg Noodle Squares

  Ingredients List:

  • 2 lbs. lamb
  • 1 onion
  • 1/2 cup Greek extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 garlic clove
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 cup crushed tomatoes
  • 6-8 cups water
  • 1-1/2 cups hilopites noodles
  • Salt & pepper to taste
 

Method:

  1. In a large pot, brown lamb in olive oil
  2. Remove browned lamb and set aside
  3. Chop onion and garlic and saute in same oil as lamb for about 5 minutes on med-high heat
  4. Add cinnamon and continue to cook for another 3 minutes
  5. Add crushed tomatoes, half the water and bring to a boil
  6. Add back the lamb, reduce heat, cover and simmer for 45 minutes
  7. Uncover and add hilopites noodles and extra water as needed
  8. Simmer until noodles are done (about 10-12 minutes)

 

Notes & Tips:
  • Makes 4 servings
  • Garnish with mizithra or kefalotyri cheese
  • Omit lamb for vegetarian version
