Melomakarona | Traditional Greek Honey Cookies | Finikia

  Ingredients List:

  • 150g fine semolina
  • 500g a/p flour
  • 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 100g orange juice
  • 3 tbsp. Greek brandy
  • 100g sugar
  • 1 tbsp. cinnamon
  • 1/3 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1/3 tsp. ground cloves
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 90g water
  • 1/2 cup Greek olive oil
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 50g honey
  • Zest of 2 oranges
  • Crumbled walnuts for garnish 

SYRUP:

  • 10oz. water
  • 600g sugar
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 3 whole cloves
  • Juice of 1 orange
  • 1/2 cup honey
 

Method:

  1. In a sauce pan, combine all ingredients of the syrup and bring to a boil
  2. Simmer for 5 minutes and set aside
  3. Pre-heat oven to 350*f/160*c
  4. In a large mixing bowl, combine semolina, baking soda and flour and set aside
  5. In another mixing bowl combine sugar, spices, vanilla, orange juice and brandy and mix well
  6. Now add the baking soda, the orange zest, veg. oil, olive oil, water and honey and continue to mix for about 3 minutes
  7. Slowly begin adding the wet mixture into the dry flour mixture and mix well
  8. Shape cookies into desired shape and place on parchment line baking sheet
  9. Bake @ 350*f for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown 
  10. Immediately after removing from oven, dip the melomakarona into the cooled syrup and allow to soak for 5-10 seconds
  11. Remove from syrup bath and garnish with crumbled walnuts

 

Notes & Tips:
  • Makes 35-45 cookies
  • Do not allow cookies to cool when removed from oven and dipped in syrup
  • Substitute almond liqueur for the brandy
