Moussaka - No Fry Light Moussaka Recipe

Ingredients List:

  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 1/3 cup Greek extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 eggplants
  • 4-6 potatoes
  • 2 onions
  • 1 tbsp. tomato paste
  • 14oz crushed tomatoes
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 cup bread crumbs
  • Salt & pepper to taste
Bechamel 
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup flour
  • 6 cups milk
  • 1 tsp. nutmeg
  • 2 egg yolks

Method:

  1. Pre-heat oven to 425*f / 220*c
  2. Slice eggplants and potatoes into 1/4" slices and place in a single layer on a baking sheet
  3. Drizzle with olive oil, season and bake for 30 minutes
  4. In a sauce pan brown ground beef and add chopped onion and garlic
  5. Add cinnamon and saute for 3 minutes
  6. Add tomato paste and crushed tomatoes and bring to a boil
  7. Simmer sauce for 15 minutes
  8. In a baking pan add some tomato sauce on the bottom to help prevent sticking
  9. Layer sliced eggplant on the bottom
  10. Spread half the sauce over eggplants and sprinkle over the sauce half the bread crumbs
  11. Layer potatoes over sauce, spread remaining sauce over potatoes with remaining bread crumbs on top and set aside
  12. In a deep sauce pan, over medium heat melt butter
  13. Add flour and stir well to combine
  14. Slowly add milk while continuing to stir constantly
  15. Add grated nutmeg
  16. Once bechamel has started to thicken well beat in the egg yolks
  17. Pour bechamel over moussaka
  18. Bake uncovered for approx. 45 minutes @ 425*

  • Can be made ahead and frozen
